2007-2008 REPORT: Education
An educated, trainable workforce is the lifeblood of future economic prosperities for all communities. Communities of lifelong learning and superior education services will emerge prosperous.
To that end, Opelousas has partnered with Volunteer Instructors Teaching Adults (VITA) to eliminate illiteracy and Community Development meets regularly with the local technical college, local agencies and businesses to discuss available short term customized trainings for high school students and adult workers.
Opelousas Community Development initial meetings with Harold Schexsnader, Assistant Dean of TH Harris; Tawana Benoit, Academic Counselor of TH Harris; Missy Grimmet, Director of Acadiana Works to discuss the possibility of short term customized trainings will be followed with subsequent meetings that will include local businesses. Employers will assist in cataloging customized trainings that will increase job retention and promotional opportunities for graduates.
