The Opelousas Fire and Police Civil Service Board is comprised of five (5) members who shall serve without compensation. The board has a chairman, vice-chairman, and a secretary. The domicile of the board shall be in the municipality it serves.
The governing body upon its own nomination shall appoint one (1) board member. Two (2) members shall be appointed from a list of four nominees that shall be furnished to the government authority by the head of a legally chartered and established four - year institution of higher education located in the most geographically proximate to the municipality. One (1) member shall be elected and appointed from the fire department, and one member shall be elected and appointed from the police department. The Chairman and Vice-Chairman shall be elected by the members of the board. Each board member shall take an oath of office, and hold the position for a period of three (3) years.
The Board represents the public interest in matter of personnel administration in the fire and police services. We advise and assist the governing body, the chiefs of the departments of the municipality, with reference to the maintenance and improvement of personnel standards and administration in the fire and police service. We also advise and assist employees in the classified service with reference to the maintenance, improvement, and administration of personnel matters related to any individual or group of employees. Conduct investigations, adopt and maintain classification, make, alter, amend, and promulgate rules necessary to carry out effectively the provisions of the law.
Application Process
Application forms may be obtained from the Opelousas Fire and Police Civil Service Office located in City Hall, 318 North Court Street, Opelousas, LA 70570 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Applicants must certify that all statements made in the application are true and correct and return to the office. Any misrepresentation of information on the application may cause rejection of the application, removal from the eligibility list, or dismissal from city employment. If a formal announcement of a vacancy has been published, application must be returned to the Fire and Police Civil Service Office before the deadline date and time specified on the job announcement. No applications will be accepted after the deadline.
Civil Service Examinations
Applicants are notified by mail of the date and time of the examination whenever the test is scheduled for vacancies by the Fire and Police Civil Service Board. Applicants are notified of exam results by mail as soon as the board approves the grades. No grades are given over the telephone. All applicants with a final grade of 75% or higher will be placed on the Fire and Police Civil Service eligibility list and will remain on the list for eighteen (18) months from the approved date or until all vacant positions are filled. The Military Preference is five (5) points added to the passing score. All new employees must satisfactorily complete a six (6) month working test period before permanent status is attained.
