Hours of Operation: Monday thru Friday - 8:00 a.m. to Noon, 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Mission of the Parks and Recreation Department is to provide parks, playground and recreational activities that will enhance the quality of life of all Opelousas citizens. The Department is divided into 4 divisions.

  • Administration – Consists of two employees, the Director, Ken Vidrine and Olivia Gailes, Clerk III. Administration is responsible for the management of the budget and all divisions.
  • Maintenance - Consists of 10 employees and is responsible for maintaining all facilities, including ball fields.  This division is managed by Doris Barrow, Jr., Maintenance Repair Foreman.
  • Recreation – Consists of 1 full-time employee and 55 seasonal employees and is responsible for all recreation programs.  The Recreation Supervisor is Clarence Watson.
  • Security – Consists of 3 full-time Park Rangers and numerous part-time rangers. Park Rangers are responsible for the safety of all individuals who participate in our programs and those using our facilities.  Tony Richard is our Park Ranger Supervisor.

The Department also has a 13 member advisory board whose goal, with the guidance and assistance of the City Administration, is to actively and energetically work to provide the best recreation programs and facilities for all the citizens of the community.

The Parks and Recreation Department maintains three large, 7 neighborhood playgrounds and various other areas which amounts to approximately 130 acres.
