A new season of Music & Market gets underway Friday, September 11, in historical Opelousas and continues every Friday through October 23rd. The event will feature Louisiana music artists as well as fresh homegrown vegetables for purchase direct from local farmers.

The September 11th Music & Market event will kick off with the Cajun sounds of Balfa Toujours. Led by Christine Balfa, the daughter of the great Cajun fiddler and Cajun ambassador, Dewey Balfa, the band plays traditional music that has been handed down though generations.  Throughout the years, Balfa Toujours has recorded six CDs, appeared in numerous films and television shows including The Big Easy, and toured North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia. Vocalist and triangle player Christine Balfa collaborates on many of the group’s heartfelt original songs and is the founder and director of Louisiana Folk Roots, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting Louisiana traditions.

Other musical artists scheduled for the fall Music & Market series include Kyle Huval and the Dixie Club Ramblers, Gerard Delafose and the Zydeco Gators, Lil Buck Senegal, Terry & the Zydeco Bad Boys, J.J. Callier and the Zydeco Knockouts, and Corey "Lil Pop" Ledet & His Zydeco Band.

With the exception of the Friday, October 9th event which will be held on the Courthouse Square in downtown Opelousas, concerts are held at the Farmer’s Market Pavilion located in the Opelousas Tourist Center and historical Le Vieux Village located just off Interstate 49.

In addition to musical entertainment Music & Market will feature fresh vegetables available for purchase direct from local farmers. Each event will also spotlight a vegetable and/or agriculture commodity.  The September 11th event will feature eggplant. Other vegetables for the series include okra, squash, cabbage, mustard greens, sweet potatoes and pumpkins.

Music & Market happens from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m., with music beginning at 6:00 p.m. Concert-goers are welcome to bring lawn chairs for seating. Because beverages sales for the concert series go towards covering the cost of bands and event expenses, ice chests will not be allowed.
