30. McCain Home, c. 1902

April 9, 1902

119 W. Jefferson Street

Walton McCain, a former mayor of Basile, Louisiana, purchased this home and an additional 500 acres stretching west towards Railroad Avenue in 1922. He moved to Opelousas at that time to protect his family after an attempt was made on his life. This was the result of an order he gave that made it unlawful for Basile’s saloons to remain open 24 hours a day. The house is built of Louisiana cypress, in the “Country Victorian” architectural style featuring 10-foot ceilings throughout.
