Catholic schools were the first organized schools in Opelousas, dating back to the 1850s. The town’s Catholic schools included St. Mary’s Academy, Academy of the Immaculate Conception, Ursuline Convent of Opelousas, St. Joseph’s Academy, St. Joseph College, Holy Ghost School, and today Opelousas Catholic School located on Prudhomme Lane near St. Landry Church.
