Nature of Work
Work activities in this class require the performance of mechanical tasks in installing, cleaning, repairing, and testing of water meters. The work often includes contact with customers in order to understand the nature of the problem and to explain what tests or repairs will be performed. Duties are performed under close supervision until routine processes are learned, often which a superior is consulted only when unusual problems are encountered. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Meter Reader Foreman or Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection Supervisor.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience:
Graduation from high school and some experience in the repair and testing of water meters or related work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
Who May Apply
This position is open to all citizens living within a 12-mile radius who meet the minimum qualifications for the position. Applicants whose qualifications are acceptable shall be notified the particulars for the examination.

Applications must be received from the Civil Service Office, Municipal Plaza, Opelousas, LA. All questions on said application must be answered and failure to do so may result in applicant receiving a lower score, or rejection of the application. All applications must be signed, mailed, or delivered to the Civil Service Office at 105 North Main Street, Opelousas, LA 70570. Will post until first three applicants received.
Five (5) points shall be added to the grade on promotional examination for all applicants with military service under honorable conditions provided that the points may be added only after a passing grade or score is attained. Applicants claiming preferences under the provisions of the rule must present discharge papers to the Civil Service Director for inspection. Eligibility for military preference as stated herein shall be determined by the Director in accordance with provisions of Section (1) (9) of Article XIV, of the Louisiana Constitution or amendments thereto.
