PUBLIC WORK OFFICE ASSISTANT PAY RANGE: 8 $9.69 ANNUAL $20,155.20
This is advanced level clerical work involved in the performance of a specialized clerical function
dealing with the Public Works Department. Employee perform a variety of complex clerical operations
frequently requiring specialized clerical knowledge of the Public Works Department. Instructions are
received from a superior on matters of following policy and procedures within the department. Although
some of the work is similar to that of other clerical classes, this class is distinguished either by the
responsibilities and/or the additional specialized duties which require additional skills in a particular area of
expertise in the Public Works Department.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Graduation from high supplemented by courses in typing and office machines, plus experience in
general and/or specialized clerical work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Ability to
type a minimum of 35 correct words per minute.
WHO MAY APPLY:
This examination is open to all permanent employees of the City of Opelousas who meet the
minimum qualifications for the position. This position is also open to all registered voters living within a
twelve (12) mile radius of the City of Opelousas. Applicants whose qualifications are acceptable shall be
notified of the particulars for taking the examination.
HOW TO APPLY:
Applications must be received from the Civil Service Office in City Hall, Opelousas, LA. All
questions on said application must be answered and failure to do so may result in applicant receiving a lower
score, or rejection of the application. All applications must be signed, mailed, or delivered to the Civil Service
Director at her office in City Hall. Applications must be received in the Civil Service Office not later than
twelve o’clock noon, August 2, 2021.
Three (3) points shall be added to the grade on Promotional examination and Five (5) points on Open Entrance for all applicants with military service under honorable conditions provided that the points are added
only after a passing grade or score is attained. Applicants claiming preference under the provisions of this
rule must present discharge papers to the Director of Personnel for determination of eligibility under the
