Opelousas Boxed Art Number Ten Unveiled

(Opelousas, LA) – Opelousas, LA) – The City of Opelousas now has ten art wrapped traffic boxes.  The tength box was unveiled on Wednesday, June 8th, 2022.  The wrapped box is part of the Boxed Art series which transforms ordinary traffic boxes into vibrant public art.  The box, which is located at the intersection of Union Street (Hwy 182) and Creswell Lane on Donald Gardner Stadium parking lot, was designed by Ayla Voitier, a recent graduate of Magnet Academy for Cultural Arts.

Ayla, who says her favorite art style is hyperrealism, was enrolled in the Talented Art classes at MACA. During her time there, she took art classes, entered art competitions and created artwork for school functions. While art classes were mandatory, the majority of the competitions and all of the extra school functions were done voluntarily. “When thinking about inspiration for this project the first thing that came to mind was music so I chose to draw the instruments that are used in zydeco music,” said Ayla, who completed her design under the supervision of MACA art instructor Kimberly Nelams-Becnel. Alya is scheduled to attend the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and major in Mechanical Engineering.

Initiated in 2021 by Opelousas Tourism and the Celebrate Opelousas 300 Committee, Boxed Art began as one of the 300-year celebration activities designed to showcase the community’s culture and heritage, enhance public spaces and highlight local artists. So far, nine traffic boxes have been transformed into art.  They include those located at the intersection of Vine and Landry Streets with featuring art by Jerome Ford, Court and Landry Streets featuring art by Sue Boagni, Union and Dunbar Streets featuring art by B.J.
