Message from Mayor Alsandor regarding safety during severe weather conditions

Good morning Citizens of Opelousas,

On Monday evening, Southwest Louisiana experienced some severe weather along with torrential flooding. With the abundance of rainfall and more rain expected in the forecast over the next few days, I ask residents to travel cautiously and be mindful of high water and potential flooding on city streets and highways. I encourage you to avoid areas that are prone to flood in the city. Please do not drive on the roadways during high and dangerous conditions as it will not only put yourself in danger but other residents as well.

Although a few weeks remain until the start of hurricane season, learn and practice evacuation routes, shelter plans, and flash flood responses. Please monitor the local weather forecast and ensure that you are prepared for the pending weather.

  • Do not walk, swim, or drive through flooded waters.
  • Don’t drive around barricades placed by the city – they are placed there for safety.
  • Please do not let children play with or go into the water. Due to the amount of projected water, currents may force children into an open maintenance hole. Water will also likely have bacteria.
  • Please check on your elderly or disabled neighbors, and make sure pets are not in peril in areas of rising water.
  • Please report areas you see are getting high water. Residents can call 337-948-2555 and Opelousas Police Department at 337-948-2500.

Thanks for your cooperation during this weather challenge. I pray you are all well and stay safe, Opelousas.

Mayor Alsandor
