(Opelousas, LA) – The City of Opelousas is pleased to be selected as one of the 47 recipients of the 2025-26 Keep Louisiana Beautiful Trash Receptacle Grant Program made possible with funding from the State of Louisiana and the Office of the Lieutenant Governor. The grant, which was submitted by Opelousas Tourism, will provide five new trash receptacles for North City Park.
Through the 2025-26 Trash Receptacle Grant Program, Keep Louisiana Beautiful awarded 230 receptacles to 47 organizations in 31 parishes. As part of the requirements of this grant, the City of Opelousas will install five trash receptacles at North City Park and perform a post installation litter scan and compare the data collected to preliminary scan results. Data will be shared with the public once available.
This is the third time the city has received the Keep Louisiana Beautiful Trash Receptacle Grant. In 2024, the city received a trash receptacle grant for eight trash cans for the downtown district while in 2023, six new trash cans were awarded and placed at Le Vieux Village.
“Litter hurts our quality of life and impacts the well-being of our community” says City of Opelousas Mayor Julius Alsandor. “With these new receptacles installed, we will be able to reduce litter and keep our parks clean and beautiful.”
“Recent data collected by Keep Louisiana Beautiful shows a reduction of litter by 78 percent in areas where trash receptacles are properly installed and maintained,” says Susan Russell, KLB Executive Director. “One of our organization’s key initiatives is to help build infrastructure that supports clean, beautiful communities. Funding trash receptacles is one way we do that. Congratulations to the City of Opelousas for being selected as a 2025-26 Trash Receptacle Grant recipient.”
