A commemoration of the Opelousas Post Militia of 1779 and a Historic Marker unveiling will take place at the Le Vieux Village Heritage Park on October 16th at noon. The men of this militia fought the British at Baton Rouge during the American Revolution. Many of their descendants are here in the Opelousas area.
When the Spanish declared war on Great Britain in 1779, Louisiana was under the control of Spain, and Bernardo de Gálvez was the Governor-General of the province of “Luisiana.” He called upon his militia units throughout the province in August of 1779 to join him on his line of march to attack the British forces headquartered in the lower Mississippi valley at Natchez. The Acadians of the Opelousas Post Militia answered the call.
This celebration of their efforts in October is presented by the Louisiana Society of the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution. FMI call 337-237-6749
