The Opelousas City Court despite its limited jurisdiction is a recognized “model” rural court within the state of Louisiana’s judicial system. The Honorable Judge Vanessa Harris during her two terms in office is successfully leading the Court into the digital age of technology. In 2016, the Louisiana Supreme Court awarded the Opelousas City Court a grant that enabled electronic reporting of dispositions to the Office of Motor Vehicles. This procurement of a new case management system transformed the court into a “paperless” environment that improved the efficiency of court proceedings and case processing.
The Court’s manager, LaVonya Malveaux, recently completed her certification in Judicial Administration from Michigan State University and serves on the Louisiana Supreme Court’s Price of Justice Advisory Committee formed to study the state’s collection and distribution of court costs, fines, and fees. Jenette Thomas, Chief Deputy Clerk of Probation, recently received a Master’s Degree in Administration of Justice and Security from the University of Phoenix. And, Lisa Boudreaux – Minutes and Juvenile Deputy Clerk, is currently pursing notary licensure from South Louisiana Community College.
