LOUISIANA GARDEN CLUB PRESENTS DISTRICT CLEANEST CITY AWARD TO CITY OF OPELOUSAS
(Opelousas, LA) – With the efforts of city staff, personnel and the reinstatement of Keep Opelousas Beautiful, Opelousas has won the 2019 Cleanest City Award in District H.
On Tuesday, April 15, Members of the Louisiana Garden Club presented Mayor Julius Alsandor with the District First Place award for the State’s Cleanest City contest. The judging for the district completion was held in March. Members of the LGFW also visited the City on April 15th for the state level judging.
The primary goal of the Cleanest City Contest is to become a litter free Louisiana. Now over 60 years old, Louisiana was the first state to hosts the Cleanest City Contest. As part of the contest, volunteer judges visit participating cities and rate them on cleanliness. Cities are categorized by population. There are eight Districts and 36 cities in their respective categories this year. The contest is one of the ways Louisiana is addressing litter throughout the state. Many cities, including Opelousas, host annual community-wide Trash Bash days with great results.
