Union Pacific Freight Depot, c. 1900
Originally located on Court Street on the east-west route of the Union Pacific Railroad, this building was used as a freight depot until the late 1980s.
Recognizing the importance that the railroad industry played in the development of modern Opelousas, the Opelousas Tourism and Activities Committee appealed to Union Pacific to save the building.
Union Pacific donated the depot to the city in 1990 and a year later the Opelousas – St. Landry Chamber of Commerce and Friends of the Chamber sponsored the move of the depot to the village. With assistance from a state grant, it was restored and in 2009 became the home of the Louisiana Orphan Train Museum.

The Orphan Train Movement was an effort to transport orphaned or abandoned children from cities on the East Coast to foster homes all across America from 1854-1929.
Louisiana was one of the many railway destinations that welcomed more than 2000 children from New York City. In Opelousas, the first train arrived in March 1907 and was followed by two more trains.
In 2009, a century-old Union Pacific freight depot was restored to become the Louisiana Orphan Train Museum. The museum is dedicated to the preservation of the historical event of the arrival of the orphan train riders and to educate the public about the Orphan Train Movement in America.

À l’origine, ce bâtiment se situa sur Court Street, sur la route est-ouest de la compagnie ferroviaire Union Pacific. Il servit d’entrepôt de fret jusqu’à la fin des années 1980.

Entre 1854 et 1929, l’Orphan Train Movement transportait des enfants orphelins ou abandonnés des villes sur la côte est vers l’ouest avec l’objectif de les placer chez des familles d’accueil à travers les États-Unis.
La Louisiane fut parmi de nombreuses destinations ferroviaires qui accueillirent plus de 2 000 enfants originaires de la ville de New York. Le premier train arriva aux Opélousas en mars 1907. Deux autres trains arrivèrent par la suite.
En 2009, cet ancien entrepôt de la compagnie ferroviaire Union Pacific, vieux d’un siècle, fut restauré pour abriter le Louisiana Orphan Train Museum. Le musée est dédié à la préservation de l’événement historique que représente l’arrivée des passagers du train des orphelins et à la sensibilisation du public par rapport à l’Orphan Train Movement aux États-Unis.
