Upcoming Property Tax Reminders
The 2023 property tax bills will be late this year due to a tax
proposition on the November 2023 Ballot.
Property taxes are due by 12/31/2023
Interest will be applied to bills January 01, 2024 and every month
thereafter it goes unpaid.
Not receiving your property tax bill does not excuse you from paying
your bill.
If you have not received your bill you can go to
www.cityofopelousas.com to get amount due, print out your tax bill,
make payment and print out receipts. You can also contact the
property tax department for information @ 337-948-2527 ext. 1225.
To change or update your mailing address and contact information,
contact the St. Landry Parish Assessor’s office @ 337-942-3166. It is
very important that you make or report any changes to the Assessor’s
office for they are the only ones that create the bills and then it is
downloaded into our system once the bills are ready to be mailed out
to the customers.
The City of Opelousas Property Tax office cannot make any changes to
tax bills.
For accounting purposes, water and property tax payments are to be
paid separately. Please do not combine both payments on one check,
if you mail in your payment and both payments are combined together
your check will be returned to you.
Certified Notices will be mailed out between March and April for
delinquent bills. At that time certified notice and advertising fees will
be applied to the bill.
Not receiving, signing or refusing certified notices does not stop the
property from being placed in the tax sale.
PAYING your property taxes is the only way to PREVENT your property
being placed in the tax sale.
The property tax sale is normally held the second week of June,
therefore it is important you make a payment no later than the first
week of June.
If payment is not received before the tax sale there will be additional
fees added to your tax bill.
Please know that once the tax sale process is completed, you the
homeowner will receive a notification by mail stating that your
property has been sold or adjudicated and once that happens fees
cannot be reversed.
Contacting the Mayor or City Clerk will not result in any changes or
adjustments to your bill.
Having a yearly tax sale is a state requirement governed by Louisiana
Statues which we are bound to as a government municipality.
If you have any questions/concerns please feel free to call my office @
337-948-2527 ext. 1225 please be sure to leave your name phone
