I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for the incredible efforts made by so many during the severe cold weather event in January. Our Public Works Department, led by Travis Vanwright and his dedicated team, worked tirelessly throughout the majority of those days, including responding to an unexpected major line puncture by a contractor in the late afternoon before the snow began. Even though our offices were closed, the team remained in constant communication, resolved issues, and continued to provide essential services. We were all hands on deck and I am proud of our team and staff for all the work that was done.
I also want to acknowledge Parish President Jessie Bellard and his team for their support in clearing our major roadways and providing much-needed transportation. Our city along with all the St. Landry Parish Mayors collaborated with St. Landry Parish Government to support a Warming Shelter, thanks to contributions from the Red Cross, Second Harvest, and other resource agencies. On behalf of the City of Opelousas, our City Council, staff and residents we express heartfelt gratitude to St. Landry Parish Government for providing a safe and warm space for our neighbors in need. A special thank you goes out to the Opelousas Police Department and Opelousas Fire Department who maintained public safety, monitored road conditions, and collaborated with various partners to keep our city safe.
I truly appreciate the cooperation of our residents who understood the need to conserve water, and I want you to know that we worked diligently to address the hundreds of phone calls, messages, and emails we received. We have identified opportunities to improve communication even further, and I look forward to introducing new ways to keep everyone informed.
Thank you as well to our local news media for sharing the multiple press releases and to everyone who helped spread important updates on social media. It is clear that we are so much better together, and when we all support one another, the impact can be tremendous.
Despite the challenges we faced, we will always cherish the memory of the historic snowfall in Opelousas. The drone videos, snowmen photos, and the scenes of snow in Le Vieux Village and around our historic homes and landmarks will be remembered for generations.
Once again, thank you for your unwavering support and dedication to our community.
Sincerely,
Mayor Julius Alsandor
City of Opelousas
