Jimmy ‘Lil Pookie’ Seraile was born in the small community of Frilot Cove in St. Landry Parish. Pookie spent much of his childhood growing up around music and soon learned to play instruments himself. He watched other musicians and sneaked into local dance clubs to gain knowledge of what was already instilled in him by his grandfather, the late Delton Broussard. Broussard, an esteemed accordionist with his legendary band, Delton Broussard & the Lawtell Playboys, had a significant influence on Pookie’s decision to play music and his interest in the accordion. At the age of twelve, Pookie won the first accordion contest at the popular Zydeco Extravaganza event.

Pookie gained experience and exposure traveling with the popular band, Zydeco Force. An influential band at the forefront of the nouveau zydeco movement. He began to learn other instruments and became a drummer with the Zydeco Blazers, later moving on as the accordion player for the group. As his confidence grew and style developed, a loyal following of fans began to grow and the group became a popular local hit in Louisiana and Texas.

The annual downtown Zydeco Breakfast takes place the Saturday of Labor Day weekend and is held in conjunction with the Original Southwest Louisiana Zydeco Music Festival. Festival organizers recently announced that this year’s festival, similar to 2020, will be recorded and televised locally as well as shown online. Opelousas Tourism, with support from Opelousas Main Street, Inc., City of Opelousas and St. Landry Parish Government hosts the free event each

year to get people excited about the Labor Day festival music and activities, as well as to bring awareness of the downtown district.

People attending the free Zydeco Breakfast are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs and enjoy the entertainment in a relaxed and charming setting in the heart of downtown Opelousas.
