(Opelousas, LA) – The City of Opelousas recently added eight new metal trash receptacles to the downtown area thanks to a recent Keep Louisiana Beautiful Trash Receptacle Grant. The grant which was made possible with funding from the State of Louisiana and the Office of the Lieutenant Governor. The trash receptacles were installed on Bellevue, Court, Main and Grolee Streets.

Through the 2024 Trash Receptacle Grant Program, Keep Louisiana Beautiful awarded 628 receptacles to 71 organizations in 40 parishes for a total value of $491,294.  As part of the requirements of this grant, Opelousas Tourism – Main Street will perform a post installation litter scan and compare the data collected to preliminary scan results. Data will be shared with the public once available.

“We are especially thankful on having been selected by Keep Louisiana Beautiful as one the grant recipients,” said Opelousas Mayor Julius Alsandor. “With these new receptacles installed, we will hopefully be able to reduce litter in our downtown district and create better shared spaces.”

This is the second time the city has received the Keep Louisiana Beautiful Trash Receptacle Grant. Last year, the city received six new trash cans which were primarily placed around Le Vieux Village. Both grants were submitted by the Opelousas Tourism and Main Street.

“Recent data collected by Keep Louisiana Beautiful shows a reduction of litter by 78 percent in areas where trash receptacles are properly installed and maintained,” says Susan Russell, KLB Executive Director. “One of our organization’s key initiatives is to help build infrastructure that supports clean, beautiful communities. Funding trash receptacles is one way we do that. Congratulations to the City of Opelousas for being selected as a 2023-24 Trash Receptacle Grant recipient.”
